Glenmore Road

512/257 Glenmore Road, Paddington

This Mies-inspired extension is a penthouse in Trumper Park with skyline views. A huge expanse of balcony facilitated the new lightweight pavilions to attach onto the existing living rooms.

Polished concrete slabs balance on top of the existing balcony spreading the load of the balanced steel columns tapering to the sky. The columns were bolted to the concrete slab supporting the lightweight roof that tapers towards the sky. Two steel brackets have been welded on to the column to form a corner detail that picks up the load of the glazing transom. This detail allowed for clear glass between the roof and transom. Sliding corner glass doors allow the space to completely open out onto the balcony.

The edge to the roof is a bullnose edge affectionately called the aeroplane wing as it appears to fly through the air.
