Mosman
Stanley Avenue /
Boddam Whetham Architects were engaged by the owner and Interior Designer
Julie Mc Court for a significant part of this restoration project.
This historic sandstone building features imported terracotta columns,
mosaic and glass tiles. Over the years various layers of “renovations”
including an additional floor and division into apartments needed to be
removed. The external joinery and stonework had been poorly maintained.
Much of
the research undertaken on site was to uncover the original elements, functions
and fabric to determine a course of sensitive restoration and refurbishment.
The original function of a “moat” to drain water from the rear underground
retaining wall and the void to ventilate the moist air was understood and re
established.
This iconic 1880’s Italianate Villa, has been listed as a Local Heritage
Item by Mosman Council. After being extensively restored, altered and
amended the quality of the development should preserve its place for the next
generation. It has received several awards including Mosman Good Design Awards
2011 Heritage Award, Pacific Plus Constructions’ win of the Master Builders’ Open
Category Award, and is shortlisted for the RAIA Heritage Award 2011.
