Surry Hills
People Salon /
The concept salon for People Surry Hills was
planned as two spaces - one public and one private - both with very separate
moods. The design concept is based off a modular system using plywood and form
ply panels that act as both screening and as a structural element for the
styling stations and bespoke cabinetry.
The idea was to
‘dress up’ a raw, industrial feeling space utilising relatively inexpensive and
sustainable materials, creating refinement and beauty through modularity of
structure and simplicity of materials.
The interior is a
continuation of the public street corridor with its exposed concrete block
walls and concrete floor. The stations honey colour creates a warm welcoming
environment and the modules present as a colonnade leading to the end feature wall
where local artists work will be showcased.
The private space is
the darkened basin room which uses standard sheets of form ply that create an
intimate, relaxing setting where the customer can enjoy a head massage or even
fall asleep.
The colour lab and salon kitchen are combined
and are located perfectly to serve refreshments and prepare colour and
technical services without creating mess or disrupting the salon operations.
The salon was nominated for the Best New Salon Design in the 2010 Schwarzkopf Professional Hair Expo Awards.
