Eastern Suburbs
Cliff-top Residence /
Stunning unprecedented ocean views are the
hall mark of this cliff-top residence. The
harshness of the midday sun has been skillfully dimmed by the dark moody interiors.
This house is a sophisticated playground for design, creating elegance from a
multitude of materials in a refined modern language.
A rustic front door, inspired by Ned Kelly’s
helmet, commences the narrative of this house, offering protection to the inner
sanctum of the luxurious interiors. The living rooms and circulation spaces
were designed using a relatively neutral palette.
The Master Ensuite was designed as an
aperture for the sea with its soft shimmering tiles complemented by the subdued
floating basin and infinity mirror. The space is flanked by deep green velvet
walls which are neutralized by the vertical timber joinery.
The ground floor guest bedroom incorporates
red as a contrast against the blue ocean, complimented by antique mirrors and
concrete vanity. The ground floor powder room incorporates tribal upholstered
walls.
The exterior has been considered as a series
of layers responding to site conditions. The first floor is ephemeral,
pristinely painted in white with its soft curves peeling back to expose the
sky.
Appearing to rise out of the cliff, the
ground and lower floors are clad with rugged basalt wall tiles which blend into
the basalt cobblestone floor tiles. The living spaces on the ground floor comprise
of charcoal vertical timber veneer panels balanced on dark concrete tiles. In
contrast, the lower ground is defined by black full height mirrors reflecting
views without the imposing harshness of the Australian sun. The selection of materials
and its refinement of details deliver a calming medative space.
